Ladybirds

To earn the Space Badge, Ladybirds need to complete any 4 of the following:

  1. Discuss suitable clothing and footwear to wear in all weathers. (Ladybird Choice Challenge 31).
  2. Name three things that are special about Earth that you could share with people from another planet?
  3. Observe the Moon in the daytime or night-time, draw what you see.
  4. Plan an imaginary trip to the Moon / to space.
  5. Design a constellation – star pattern.
  6. Take part in an activity to learn the Names of the Planets
    a. Play a game about a journey through the solar system
    or
    b. Learn a song about the Solar System.

Brownies

To earn the Space Badge, Brownies must compete any 4 of the following:

  1. Explain what makes the Earth so special for life.
  2. Take part in an activity to learn about the night sky (Choice Challenge 31.)
    1. Stargazing- Find the North Star
    2. Stargazing- Look at the Moon over a few days or nights – how does it change?
    3. Make constellation patterns
  3. Take a solar system walk – share what you know about each planet.
  4. Make a model space station from recycled material.
  5. Make / Fire a model rocket (see Brownie Science Investigator option 10).
  6. Look for the International Space Station in the night sky, find out how many astronauts are aboard it right now and what countries they come from.

Guides

To earn the Space Badge, Guides must complete number 1 & 2 and any other three of the following: 

  1. Identify 3 constellations and the legends connected with them (see Journey Programme: Global Awareness Choice Challenge 7.)
  2. Make a poster/model/video to share four facts about any of the items listed below with a member of Ladybirds / Brownies/ other Patrol in your unit.
    1. Mars – ExoMars or Mars Express
    2. Jupiter – Galileo
    3. Saturn – Cassini & Huygens
    4. Mercury – BepiColumbo
    5. Venus – Venus Express
    6. CHEOPS mission that studies exoplanets
    7. Rosetta and Philae mission that studied a comet
  3. Describe two significant events in space exploration. Which countries were involved? When did it happen? (i.e. Sputnik, Yuri Gagarin, Valentina Tereshkova, Apollo Missions, Space Race, building the International Space Station)
  4. Discover more about Irish women working in the space sector: ie. EIRSAT team, Karen O Flaherty. Write a letter to one of these women.
  5. Find out when a planet/the International Space Station is visible and plan to observe it.
  6. Survey your area for light pollution – How many stars can you see? Can you see the Andromeda Galaxy/the Milky Way?
  7. Design and make a model moon base.
  8. Explain how satellites help us understand our Earth (weather satellites, fire detection, flood relief, disaster planning) and how they work.
  9. Visit an astronomical site (i.e. Lough Gur, Blackrock Castle Observatory, Birr Castle Gardens & Science Centre, Dunsink Observatory, Armagh Observatory and Planetarium, Inishowen Maritime Museum & Planetarium or Mayo Dark Sky Park)
  10. Invite members of a local astronomy club to talk to you.
